If you’re missing one or more teeth, there’s a good chance that you and your denturist have discussed partial dentures as a tooth replacement option.

What are partial dentures?

Partial dentures are a removable dental appliance that fill the gap left by one or more missing teeth. Partial dentures can be custom-made for you by your denturist in Oakville.

Partial dentures are made of artificial teeth are attached to a plastic base that’s usually pinkish or a pinky-brown in colour (made to match your natural gum-colour). They can be attached to your mouth in a few different ways – sometimes by a metal framework that attaches to your teeth, or using precision attachments which are more expensive, but also appear more natural than metal clasps.

Because partial dentures are custom-made for your unique mouth, the process will begin by taking impressions of your mouth so a replica can be created that outlines the exact dimensions of your mouth, teeth, and the gap being filled.

Those impressions will be used by a denturist to create a set of partials that fit your mouth exactly.

What do partial dentures feel like?

Partial dentures are a new appliance in your mouth, so it’s perfectly normal to feel something strange and bulky for the first few days. Don’t worry – you’ll get used to the feeling of the dentures and it will start feeling natural soon.

Partial dentures are removable, making them easy to clean and maintain. However, at the beginning the process of removing and inserting this appliance will feel quite cumbersome, and it will take some practise before you can put them in and take them out smoothly and quickly. Not to worry – just be patient and you’ll be a pro in no time.

Even though they’re made specifically for your mouth, they will need adjusting from time to time, especially over the first few months. Partial dentures can put pressure on different areas of the mouth depending on the shape and curvature of your gums. Keep track of any areas where you feel soreness or pressure, and do not skip and of your follow-up appointments so you can be sure not to miss any important adjustments.
